The Lagoon bay airstrip was created many years ago by a small group within the club. A shack was constructed there for use by members of the group and the airstrip was available for use as a training strip and place to go for club members.
In recent years the strip has become somewhat in need of maintenance and there was some doubt that it would be able to continue.
I'm very pleased to report that the Lagoon Bay shack group together with a few other club members have "refurbished" the airstrip there. Congratulations to Matt Harper and the group for organising this and liasing with the owner, Mr Tom Dunbabin regarding the use of the airstrip. It has been agreed with Mr Dunbabin that the airstrip will remain open provided it is kept in a safe operational condition.
The airstrip has been mowed, wombat holes filled and the wind sock raised to where it is more likely to show the correct wind direction. Paul Boland will be building a new wind sock pole which will be placed off to the side of the strip about half way along so that it is less liable to be affected by turbulence from the dunes on the eastern side of the strip.
The strip can now be used for visits and training with confidence that it is back in a sound operational condition.
The club will be reimbursing the costs of materials for the wind sock, new markers and other expenses to the shack group for the refurbishment of the airstrip. Thanks to all those who contributed their time and energy on the weekend of May 15th and 16th, particularly Nick Arnold who provided his truck and Bobcat which proved invaluable.
